Read nowPack a jacket for Hanoi and sunscreen for Ho Chi Minh City, because you’ll need both within the same fortnight. February splits Vietnam into three genuinely different climates, and a traveller moving the length of the country in a single trip can go from misty mountain mornings to beach heat in a matter of days.
At Exclusive Expeditions, we design every Vietnam itinerary around exactly this contrast, so nobody arrives in the wrong region wearing the wrong clothes.
Hanoi and Ha Long Bay stay cool and dry through February, with daytime temperatures sitting between 17°C and 23°C and evenings dropping to a crisp 10°C to 15°C. Expect overcast skies more often than bright sun, along with the light, persistent drizzle locals call crachin.
Push up into Sapa, and the mountains turn genuinely cold. Nights here can fall to 5°C or lower, so pack proper layers if trekking is on your itinerary. The upside is spectacular: plum and peach blossoms cover the hillsides just as the cold starts to ease.
Hoi An, Da Nang, and Hue hit their sweet spot in February. Daytime temperatures settle comfortably between 24°C and 27°C, skies stay largely clear, and the heaviest central rains have already moved through by this point in the year.
This makes February genuinely excellent for wandering Hoi An’s lantern-lit old town or exploring Hue’s imperial citadel without the intense heat that arrives later in spring. Pack light layers for the day and something warmer for the occasional cool evening.
Head south to Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, and Phu Quoc, and February delivers Vietnam at its driest and sunniest. Daytime highs climb to 32°C or more, humidity stays relatively low for the region, and rainfall drops to almost nothing.
These conditions make February one of the best months to explore the Mekong Delta’s floating markets or relax on Phu Quoc’s beaches. Bring breathable clothing, strong sun protection, and plenty of water, since the dry heat builds quickly by midday.
EE recommends: If your itinerary spans the whole country, pack for three climates rather than one. Layers for the north, light clothing for the centre, and proper sun protection for the south all belong in the same suitcase.
Tet often falls within February, and it reshapes travel across the entire country for around a week. Streets fill with flower markets and family celebrations, but transport gets busier, some smaller businesses close, and popular sites see larger crowds than usual.
None of this rules out a February trip. Many travellers find the festive atmosphere, especially in Hoi An’s lantern-strung old town, genuinely adds to the experience. It simply pays to check the exact Tet dates for your travel year and plan around them.
