A seasonal guide to Greenland

Spring Summer Autumn Winter

Spring

March - May

The Arctic spring is a season of anticipation as the days rapidly lengthen and the frozen landscape begins its slow thaw. This is the premier time for traditional dog-sledging expeditions across frozen fjords and witnessing the arrival of over 60 species of migratory birds. While nights remain cold, they offer spectacular final opportunities to witness the northern lights before the midnight sun arrives.

Summer

June - August

Experience the true Arctic summer with 24-hour daylight and the sun never setting above the Arctic Circle. This is the peak time for expedition cruising, kayaking amongst towering icebergs, and hiking through the blooming tundra. Watch humpback whales feeding in the nutrient-rich fjords and celebrate National Day on 21 June with the vibrant local communities.

Autumn

September - October

The tundra transforms into a sea of burnished gold and deep crimson, creating a dramatic backdrop for photography. As the nights return, the northern lights begin to dance once more across the rapidly darkening skies. This is a quieter, reflective time for exploration, offering a sense of deep isolation as the birds begin their long migration south.

Winter

November - February

A period of profound quiet and extreme cold, where the landscape is gripped by ice and the polar night. While leisure travel is restricted, it offers the ultimate test of resilience for those seeking a rare glimpse of muskox and reindeer in a frozen world. The deep winter nights provide the most intense and frequent displays of the aurora borealis.

The natural wonders

Greenland is home to some of the planet’s most powerful natural spectacles. Colossal icebergs, some several kilometres in length, drift through its bays, while the Greenland Ice Cap dominates the interior. In the coastal waters, humpback, minke, and bowhead whales thrive alongside seals and seabird colonies. On land, muskoxen and reindeer roam the tundra, while the elusive Arctic fox survives the harshest winters. The landscape itself is a wonder, shaped by moving ice and a silence that feels life-enhancing and profoundly transformative.
