A seasonal guide to Svalbard

Spring Summer Autumn Winter

Spring

March - May

The “sunny winter” season brings short, bright days and thick snow across the landscape. This is the premier time for overland snowmobile expeditions and skiing down virgin slopes in complete seclusion. The pack ice is at its most extensive, offering the best conditions for tracking polar bears by snowmobile with expert guides.

Summer

June - August

Experience the 24-hour midnight sun as the sea ice begins to melt, allowing for extraordinary boat trips and expedition cruises. This is prime time for viewing the king of the Arctic on the pack ice and watching millions of migratory birds swarm the coastal cliffs. Enjoy kayaking alongside walruses and hiking through the blooming tundra in pleasantly warm temperatures.

Autumn

September - October

The temperatures begin to drop and the first snow returns to the mountain peaks. This is a peaceful time for exploration as the summer crowds depart and the landscape takes on a crisp, golden light. It is an exceptional time for tundra photography and witnessing the return of the stars as the polar nights begin to lengthen.

Winter

November - February

A magical season of total darkness where the northern lights can dance across the sky at any time of day. Experience the thrill of dog-sledging through the silent, starlit wilderness or exploring abandoned Russian mining towns in the deep snow. This season provides a rare, intimate perspective on the resilience of life in the high Arctic.

The natural wonders

Svalbard is home to the king of the Arctic, with polar bears outnumbering humans across the archipelago. Massive walruses haul out on ice floes, while beluga and blue whales frequent the nutrient-rich coastal waters. The tundra supports resilient populations of Svalbard reindeer and Arctic foxes, while millions of seabirds swarm the cliffs during the summer months. The scenery itself is a wonder, with 60% of the land covered by glaciers and mountains that appear to rise directly from the deep blue sea.
