The voyage is round-trip from Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen, sailing up the Svalbard coast and then north into the drifting pack ice with the objective of reaching 90 degrees north, the Geographic North Pole, before returning the same way. Reaching the Pole is the goal of every departure, though the exact route and timing depend on ice and weather.
Only one passenger ship can do it: the world’s sole luxury icebreaker, built to a PC2 polar class that lets it push through more than two metres of ice. The Pole lies under permanent drifting pack ice some 700 kilometres from land, beyond the reach of conventional expedition ships.
Every effort is made, and the ship is built precisely for this, but the high Arctic is ruled by ice and weather. The captain and expedition leader set the route day by day, and the exact experience at the Pole depends on conditions on the day.
Along the Spitsbergen coast and in the pack ice you may encounter polar bears, seals, whales and abundant seabirds, set against thousand-year-old glaciers, fjords and the endlessly shifting sea ice. Wildlife is never guaranteed in the wild, but the region is exceptionally rich in high summer.
