Day 1

Journey begins

This journey begins with a flight to Kathmandu, the cultural and spiritual heart of Nepal. As the landscape shifts toward the Himalayas, anticipation builds for ancient temples, sacred rituals, and mountain traditions that have shaped life in this region for centuries.

Day 2

Kathmandu, Nepal

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you are warmly welcomed by your guide and gently assisted through arrival formalities. The scent of incense lingers in the air as you transfer comfortably to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax and prepare for the adventures ahead in Nepal.

Day 3

Kathmandu, Nepal

After breakfast, begin at Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu shrine. Along the Bagmati River, smoke from funeral pyres rises gently as priests chant and saffron clad devotees offer prayers to Lord Shiva. The atmosphere is powerful and deeply moving. Continue to Boudhanath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest stupas in the world. Spin prayer wheels, watch monks in crimson robes, and absorb the peaceful rhythm of pilgrims circling the white dome. Later, drive to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Discover Nyatapola Temple, the 55 Window Palace and Pottery Square, where artisans shape clay using centuries old traditions before returning to Kathmandu.

Day 4

Pokhara, Nepal

A short morning flight carries you from Kathmandu to Pokhara, revealing sweeping views of the Himalayas, including Annapurna and the sacred peak of Machhapuchhre rising above the clouds. On arrival, visit the hilltop World Peace Stupa for wide views over the valley and lake. At the Tibetan Refugee Camp, meet artisans crafting carpets and prayer flags. Day 5

Pokhara, Nepal

Rise before dawn for a 30-minute drive to Sarangkot. As the first light spills across the horizon, the peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri glow in gold, and Machhapuchhre stands sharp against the morning sky. The stillness feels almost sacred. Return to visit Bindhyabasini Temple, where devotees offer flowers and bells ring softly in the mountain air. At the Gurkha Memorial Museum, discover the proud legacy of the Gurkha soldiers. End your day wandering Pokhara Old Bazaar, its Newari façades and spice scented lanes alive with local colour.

Day 6

Kathmandu, Nepal

Fly back to Kathmandu, catching a final glimpse of the Himalayas from above. On arrival, explore Patan Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire Krishna Temple’s stone carvings and wander palace courtyards where artisans still craft metalwork and thangka paintings by hand. Climb to Swayambhunath Stupa (also known as Monkey Temple), its golden spire and watchful eyes overlooking the valley. Later, stroll through Asan and Indrachowk markets, fragrant with spices, before ending in lively Thamel, where cafés glow softly as evening falls.

Day 7

Thimphu, Bhutan

A spectacular flight carries you across the eastern Himalayas, with distant views of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga before descending into Paro Valley. After arrival formalities, begin at Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, its butter lamps flickering softly. Pause at Tachogang Lhakhang Bridge, prayer flags fluttering above the gorge. Day 8

Thimphu, Bhutan

Begin the day at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, where students and artisans practise Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, from intricate wood carving to vibrant painting. Watch craftsmanship passed down through generations in this lively studio. Next, step into rural life at the Folk Heritage Museum, a traditional farmhouse filled with historic tools, utensils, and stories of village life. In the afternoon, take a gentle hike to Tango Monastery. At 2,600 metres, the hilltop monastery offers quiet reflection and sweeping valley views. End at Changangkha Lhakhang, one of the city’s oldest temples, its architecture both serene and timeless.

Day 9

Punakha, Bhutan

Start the day at Tashichho Dzong, a striking fortress-monastery where ornate courtyards and manicured gardens create a peaceful beginning. Pause at the Memorial Chorten, dedicated to Bhutan’s third king, its golden spire gleaming in the morning light. Embark on a scenic drive for approximate 4 hours to Punakha, crossing Dochula Pass at 3,100 metres. On clear days, the Himalayas rise sharply against the sky. Pass terraced fields and quaint villages, then explore the Royal Botanical Park Lamperi, where native flora and peaceful trails invite quiet discovery.

Day 10

Punakha, Bhutan

After breakfast, visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, perched where the Pho and Mo Chhu rivers meet. Built in 1637, its ornate courtyards, carved wooden beams, and sacred temples reveal centuries of Bhutanese history and spiritual life. Next, ascend to Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple of Drukpa Kunley. Couples and pilgrims alike seek its blessings, surrounded by prayer flags fluttering on the hilltop. In the afternoon, enjoy a gentle one-hour hike through rice fields and pine forests to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. The hilltop chorten offers sweeping valley views and a serene, spiritual finale to your day.

Day 11

Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey), Bhutan

After an early breakfast, drive 2.5 hours through rolling hills and over Lawa La Pass, descending into the glacial Phobjikha Valley. Known as Gangtey, the valley’s serene meadows and forests shelter the endangered, black-necked cranes each winter. Visit Gangtey Monastery, perched above the valley, its white walls and prayer flags framing panoramic views. Later, enjoy a gentle 45-minute walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, where pine-scented air, quiet streams, and grazing yaks reveal the tranquil beauty and wildlife of this pristine Himalayan landscape.

Day 12

Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey), Bhutan

Begin the day with a gentle village walk, where terraced fields, fluttering prayer flags, and smiling villagers reveal the rhythms of rural Bhutanese life. Learn about traditional farming and the harmony between the community and the land. Visit the Black Necked Crane Information Centre to discover the efforts protecting these graceful winter visitors, exploring their habitats and unique behaviours. In the afternoon, meet local artisans, observing traditional textiles, woodwork, and crafts. Try your hand at creating a piece and listen to stories that weave together Bhutan’s cultural heritage and enduring artistry, leaving a lasting connection to the valley and its people.

Day 13

Bumthang, Bhutan

Set off on a scenic drive to Bumthang, a region celebrated for its landscapes and cultural treasures. Pause at Chendebji Chorten, an 18th century stupa surrounded by tranquil fields, perfect for a reflective stop. Continue through Trongsa Dzong, perched dramatically above the town, and explore the Royal Heritage Museum Trongsa for insights into Bhutan’s royal history. Enjoy lunch at the serene Willing Falls before completing the drive to Bumthang. Arrive at your lodge in the evening to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s discoveries.

Day 14

Bumthang, Bhutan

After breakfast, take a gentle walking tour to three of Bumthang’s sacred temples. At Jambay Lhakhang, built in the 7th century, pilgrims offer prayers as ancient stone walls radiate history. Visit Kurjey Lhakhang to see Guru Rinpoche’s rock imprint, then Tamshing Lhakhang, famed for sacred murals and spiritual learning. In the afternoon, join a cooking class at a traditional farmhouse to prepare Ema Datshi, savouring your creation for lunch. Explore the Dorjibi Weaving Centre to witness masterful Bhutanese textiles and pick up exquisite handwoven souvenirs.

Day 15

Bumthang, Bhutan

After an early breakfast, journey into the scenic Tang Valley, where terraced fields, traditional farmhouses, and mountain vistas unfold at every turn. Visit the sacred Burning Lake, where Guru Rinpoche’s disciple Pema Lingpa uncovered a hidden treasure, its tranquil waters radiating spiritual serenity. Continue to Pema Choling Nunnery, meet the resident nuns, and learn about their daily meditative practices. Explore Ogyen Cholling Palace Museum, discovering ancestral artifacts and Bhutanese heritage. Enjoy a farm-to-table lunch prepared with organic produce before some leisure time, then return to Bumthang for the evening.

Day 16

Paro, Bhutan

After breakfast, we will take a flight from Bumthang to Paro, Bhutan’s beautiful and historic town, known for its picturesque landscapes and important cultural sites. Upon arrival, visit the National Museum of Bhutan, housed in the historic Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower that dates to 1656. The museum, converted into its present form in 1968, offers an extensive collection of Bhutanese art, including rare bronze statues, paintings, and religious artifacts, all reflecting Bhutan’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Next, head to Rinpung Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks. This stunning fortress-monastery, built in 1646, is perched on a hilltop overlooking the Paro Chu River. Known for its grand architecture and historical significance, Rinpung Dzong serves as the administrative center of the Paro district. Take your time to explore the dzong’s beautiful courtyards, temples, and murals, all of which are intricately decorated with traditional Bhutanese art. This site also offers panoramic views of the valley.

Day 17

Paro, Bhutan

Today begins with a serene offering of butter lamps at the legendary Tiger’s Nest. From Satsam Chorten, embark on a gentle hike through whispering forests to Taktsang Monastery. Perched on a rocky cliff nearly 800 metres above the Paro Valley, the monastery is steeped in legend, where Guru Padma Sambhava, the second Buddha, is said to have arrived on a flying tigress. The trail winds past tumbling streams and fragrant pine, culminating in a viewpoint that leaves you breathless. For those who wish, an additional hour’s climb leads to the monastery itself. In the afternoon, laughter fills the air at a local archery range, where you can try Bhutan’s national sport, steeped in tradition and community spirit. The day continues with a visit to Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples, dating back to the 7th century. As evening falls, a warm farmhouse dinner awaits, where you savour authentic Bhutanese flavours and the gentle hospitality of a local family.

Depart Paro

After breakfast, transfer to Paro International Airport for your flight to Kathmandu, connecting with your return journey to the UK. Reflect on the tranquil valleys, sacred monasteries, and warm Bhutanese hospitality that have shaped an unforgettable chapter of your Himalayan adventure.

Arrive home
