A seasonal guide to Kimberley

Spring Summer Autumn Winter

Spring

September - November

The temperatures begin to rise, and the wildlife becomes increasingly active around dwindling water sources. This is a brilliant time for birdwatching and seeing reptiles basking on the ancient red rocks. The barramundi fishing is also exceptional during this transitional period.

Summer

December - February

Known as the “waterfall” season, this time brings dramatic tropical storms and spectacular lightning displays. While many land routes are closed, private helicopter tours offer a unique, bird’s-eye view of the flooded plains. It is the most raw and powerful time to witness Kimberley’s transformation.

Autumn

March - May

As the “wet” season ends, the waterfalls are at their most thundering and impressive. The landscape is a vibrant, lush green, and the air is fresh. It is an ideal time for flightseeing to witness the raw power of the Mitchell and King George Falls.

Winter

June - August

This is the peak season, offering clear blue skies and pleasantly warm days. Perfect for expedition cruising through the Buccaneer Archipelago or hiking into the Bungle Bungles. You can enjoy the full range of activities in total comfort under the Australian sun.

The natural wonders

The Kimberley is home to some of the planet’s most unique wildlife and geological phenomena. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit the river systems, while humpback whales migrate through the Camden Sound during the winter months. On land, wallabies and dingoes roam the rugged ranges, and the sky is filled with an array of birds from sea eagles to colourful cockatoos. The landscape itself is a wonder, with tides that create thundering waterfalls and reefs that appear to rise from the ocean, shaping an environment that feels profoundly powerful.
