Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Your journey into the heart of the Balkans begins today as you board your flight to Sarajevo. One of Europe's most layered and least understood capitals awaits, a city that has absorbed centuries of empire, survived a century of upheaval, and emerged with a character entirely its own. On arrival, you are warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel to rest and settle in. As evening falls, step out to a local restaurant, where the aroma of grilled meats and fresh bread fills the air. Over dinner, begin your first taste of Bosnia and Herzegovina, easing gently into the rhythm of this compelling city.

Day 2

Trebević, Bosnia & Herzegovina

This morning, ascend by cable car to Trebević, the forested peak rising above Sarajevo. Among pine scented trails and cool mountain air, sweeping views stretch across red rooftops and distant hills, offering a peaceful contrast to the city below. Return to explore Baščaršija, the Ottoman heart of the capital. Pass the elegant Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and stand at the historic street corner where the twentieth century was set in motion. Enjoy lunch among bustling stalls before an evening at Hedona vineyard, where local wines and golden valley light create a refined and memorable welcome to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Day 3

Visoko, Bosnia & Herzegovina

This morning, depart Sarajevo and drive through gentle countryside to Visoko, a quiet town that has drawn global curiosity. Begin at the Belvedere site for panoramic views over the valley before visiting the excavation area of the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun. Continue to the summit for a pause and coffee, taking in sweeping landscapes. Explore the Ravne tunnels with a specialist guide, learning about ongoing research and local legends. Enjoy a home prepared lunch with local hosts, then stroll through the peaceful greenery of Park Ravne 2 before returning to the city.

Day 4

Visoko, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Spend the morning at the Belvedere and explore the intriguing Ravne Tunnels, where history and legend intertwine beneath the earth. Pause for lunch amid the peaceful surroundings of Starry Night Park, one of Vincent van Gogh’s most famous paintings, inspired entrepreneur from Visoko to recreate it using lavender and other predominantly aromatic, culinary, and medicinal herbs. Spread across 70 hectares, this living artwork offers visitors a sensory, immersive experience that celebrates art, nature, and local heritage. After that, visit the Tumulus for a quiet moment of meditation, absorbing the valley’s serene energy. In the evening, return to your hotel for some free time to relax. For those seeking adventure, an optional gyrocopter flight over the valley offers a breath-taking aerial perspective, revealing the sweeping landscapes and pyramidal hills from above.

Day 5

Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

This morning's drive south passes through Konjic, where Tito's legendary Cold War nuclear bunker lies buried beneath the hillside. Built in secret between 1953 and 1979 to shelter Yugoslavia's leadership in the event of nuclear war, it was declassified only after the country's dissolution and is now one of the most extraordinary twentieth-century sites in Europe. From there you continue to the village of Buna, where fresh trout is served beside the spring source of the Buna River, before arriving in Mostar in time for a walking tour of the UNESCO-listed old town. The Stari Most, the sixteenth-century Ottoman bridge rebuilt after its destruction in 1993, spans the turquoise Neretva in a single elegant arch, and the lanes and workshops around it reward unhurried exploration well into the evening.

Day 6

Medjugorje, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Today belongs to the wine country of Herzegovina, one of the most underrated wine-growing regions in Europe. The day is structured around a tour of three family estates: Podrum Andrija, where a guided cellar tour is followed by a degustation with local bites; Vinarija Nuić, where a light lunch accompanies the tasting; and Vinarija Majić, where the day's final glasses are poured. Between visits, a short walk to the Kravice waterfalls offers a moment of genuine natural drama, the Trebižat River cascading over a broad horseshoe of travertine in a scene that draws comparisons with far more famous destinations. You settle for the night at Etno Selo Medjugorje, a traditional village retreat amid the vines.

Day 7

Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina

A morning drive brings you to Trebinje, one of Herzegovina's most quietly appealing towns, where a compact old quarter enclosed by Ottoman walls sits beside the Trebišnjica River and the pace of life feels measurably slower than anywhere you have been. A coffee stop sets the tone before you continue to the Tvrdoš Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox community that has been producing wine on this hillside since the sixteenth century and whose cellar tour is among the most atmospheric in the region. Lunch at the celebrated Vukoje restaurant includes a full wine cellar tour before an afternoon walk through the old town and a drive into the surrounding hills as the light thickens over the valley.

Day 8

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

The final day of driving takes you back through some of Bosnia's most historically layered landscape. The medieval necropolis at Radimlja near Stolac is one of the finest collections of stećci tombstones in the country, their carved reliefs dating to the twelfth and fifteenth centuries and standing in the open countryside with no fanfare and very few visitors. From there, the hilltop fortress town of Počitelj comes into view, its Ottoman walls and towers rising above the Neretva in a setting that feels entirely removed from the modern world. Lunch is taken at Restaurant Kovačević in Jablanica before the final drive back to Sarajevo, where you check into the Isa Begov Hamam, a beautifully converted sixteenth-century hammam in the heart of the old city, for your final night in Bosnia.

Day 9

Return home

After a final breakfast in the old city, a transfer takes you to Sarajevo Airport for your flight back to London. Bosnia is not a country that announces itself loudly, but it leaves a particular kind of impression, one that tends to surface in unexpected moments long after you have returned home.
